Just saw a Ted talk titled “Don’t believe everything you think” by Lauren Weinstein, a lecturer at Standford University. She talked about how we were all fearless and bold as children but as we grow up and enter society (maybe at the tender age of 4 or 5 when you first arrived at kindergarten), we were told what to do and what not to do. Our parents’ expectations become ours and these are ropes. The ropes are tying us down and preventing us from going out of our comfort zones or just from discovering what our true passion is.
Some common ropes are:
Fear of failure
Fear of imperfection
Fear of not being loved
These ropes tie us down! Sometimes we just need to be fearless and try new things and follow our hearts to find that passion.
Our brain tells us that we should be on the lookout for danger and possible failures. Our brains actually trick us sometimes. Our beliefs form our reality. If we believe we’re beautiful, every smile confirms that. If we believe we’re ugly, every stare confirms that. So if that’s how it works, then we should always try to look on to the bright side because that will become our reality.
I’m trying. Are you?
